20th ANNIVERSARY OF GANI FAWEHINMI

 


The 20th anniversary of late Gani Fawehinmi annual lecture was organised by Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch. The theme of the lecture was “The Right to Self Determination and Agitation for Secession in Nigeria”. 

Several senior attorneys, Human rights activists, and supporters of democracy present in the 20th anniversary lecture called out for independence in Nigeria, an end to poor leadership and mismanagement of public funds.

It was discussed that the nation might not advance without the effort of it's people in confronting the issue of democratic disintegration.

Human rights activist, Comrade Ezenwa Nwagu addressed the many calls for the country to come apart and chastised the political elite for enabling tribalism to thrive because it benefits their own interests.

Senior advocate, Barr. Dele Adenisha expressed his opinion that the country needs a new constitution in order to ensure effective government, because the Nigerian constitution even with it's amendments remains an irrational constitution with unitary components that functions in federal forms.

Femi Falana, a well-known human rights activist, urged Nigerians to demand strong governance in their country and hold government officials accountable for how they spend public money.

On behalf of the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Attorney-General of Lagos, Pedro Lawal, he urged all human rights activists to follow in the footsteps of the late Gani Fawehinmi and become involved in politics.

He advocated for history to be included in Nigeria's educational curriculum, in order to enhance knowledge of the nation's heroes among the next generations.
