Lagos Charts Bold Path to Sustainability at Eko Waste Summit 2025

At the heart of Lagos' ambition to build a cleaner and more resilient city, environmental leaders, policymakers, and innovators gathered from April 23rd to 25th at NECA House, Alausa, Ikeja, for the 2nd Edition of the Eko Waste Summit 2025.

Organized by the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), year’s summit, themed "Circular Economy Pathways: Innovation and Collaboration for Sustainable Waste Management and Climate Resilience in Lagos State," brought a renewed sense of urgency and commitment to tackling waste and climate challenges in Africa's most populous city.





Representing the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reaffirmed the state’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability.

Speaking passionately at the summit, Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the expansion of recycling programs, the promotion of waste-to-wealth projects, and the integration of smart waste management technologies.

“Our goal is to transform waste into wealth, leveraging innovation and technology to build a cleaner, healthier Lagos for generations to come,"  He stated.

Adding depth to the summit’s dialogue, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) made a significant contribution. Represented by Mrs. Mbanali, Deputy Director and Head of the Ojo Zonal Office, the agency's General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, delivered a presentation titled "Lagos State’s Approach to Climate Resilience: Successes, Challenges & Opportunities."

In his address, Dr. Ajayi detailed the urgent environmental threats facing Lagos from rising sea levels to intensified flooding and emphasized the state's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050., 

He spotlighted the Lagos Climate Action Plan (CAP), a comprehensive roadmap driving strategic interventions across energy, transportation, and waste sectors, underpinned by strong policy frameworks and both local and international collaborations.

Further enriching the summit’s conversations, Mrs. Adedayo Adebayo, Deputy Director of the Environmental Sustainability Department at LASEPA, participated in a vibrant panel session on "Innovative Sustainable E-Waste Management: Challenges and Opportunities."

She shed light on Lagos' proactive steps towards managing the growing challenge of the electronic waste through innovation, regulatory enforcement, and multisectoral partnerships. 

Several brands exhibited at the summit, Access bank, Lafarge, TA Community and others was present.

The Eko Waste Summit 2025 has served as a powerful reminder that collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment are key to securing a cleaner, more resilient future
