Chief Ayo Adebayo: A Life Anchored in Truth and Service

Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96, was a distinguished Nigerian nationalist, lawyer, and elder statesman. His life was marked by an unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and the pursuit of a better Nigeria.

Early Life and Education

Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Chief Adebanjo was the only child of his mother. His early education took him through several schools in Lagos, including Saint Saviours Primary School, Holy Trinity School, and Cathedral School. 

In January 1944, he gained admission to CMS Grammar School, Lagos, Nigeria's oldest secondary school, founded in 1859. Despite facing mockery from classmates due to his mother's trade as a cigarette seller, Adebanjo excelled academically and was known for his impeccable appearance, earning him the nickname "Spotless Banjus". He later became a proud member of the school's alumni association, the Old Grammarians Society.

Political Activism and Advocacy

Chief Adebanjo's political journey began as a founding member of the Action Group in 1951, alongside his mentor, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He co-founded Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, where he served as a leader and vocal advocate for restructuring Nigeria into a true federal state. 

He was a staunch advocate for federalism, believing that a decentralized government structure was essential for Nigeria's unity and development.

During the 1990s, Adebanjo played a pivotal role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy movement that opposed military rule and championed the restoration of civilian governance after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Later Years and Legacy


In his later years, Adebanjo remained an influential voice in Nigerian politics, consistently advocating for a Nigeria rooted in justice and equity. Chief Adebanjo's life was characterized by unwavering integrity and a steadfast commitment to his principles. A picture of true humility, he never traded truth for comfort so much that he endorsed Peter Obi of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election. 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Adebanjo as a “father figure” and expressed that his respect and admiration for him has never wavered.

Chief Ayo Adebanjo have impacted the lives of many, all who knew him drew from his boundless wisdom. His contributions were recognized by many, and his portrait was among those exhibited during CMS Grammar School's 160th Founder’s Day celebrations, honoring alumni who had significantly impacted various fields.

In recognition of his contributions, the Nigerian Senate called on the federal government to name a national monument in his honor

Chief Ayo Adebanjo passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 96. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. 

Chief Adebanjo is remembered as a principled and courageous leader and a father whose legacy continues to inspire advocates of democracy, national unity and good governance in Nigeria.
