Igbo Community Celebrates Heritage Day in Lagos
The Igbo community in Lagos State on October 19, 2025, gathered in large numbers at the Police College Compound, Ikeja, to celebrate Igbo Heritage Day, an annual event honoring Igbo culture, unity, and tradition.
Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Apostle Patrick Nwanze (Agu Anioma), expressed appreciation to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Council of Ndieze Igbo, community leaders, and stakeholders for their support in making the event a success. He noted that despite attempts by some individuals to disrupt the event, it went on successfully, emphasizing that the Igbo nation is greater than any individual or group. Nwanze urged those involved in such acts to embrace unity and work for the progress of the community.
Chief Everest Ozonweke, Coordinator of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Southwest, described Igbo Heritage Day as a global celebration observed by Igbos across major cities to promote their language, culture, and ingenuity. He praised the organizers and sponsors for their commitment, adding that Ohanaeze Ndigbo is taking steps to revive the Igbo language among the youth. He revealed that the President-General of Ohanaeze recently inaugurated a think tank of vice chancellors to develop strategies to ensure the language does not go into extinction.
Also speaking, Ubochi C. Ubochi, Traditional Prime Minister of Ndigbo in Eti-Osa LCDA, said the event was aimed at showcasing the rich heritage of the Igbo people. He mentioned that groups such as Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Igbo World Congress, and Aka Ikenga are actively working to preserve the language and culture. According to him, growing international interest in the Igbo language — with countries like China, Japan, and the Netherlands offering it in schools and universities — shows that the language will continue to
thrive.
